After shattering mid-turn, the neck was recast in black epoxy — a Kintsugi-inspired contrast repair that became part of the piece's story · 5" × 5" × 5"
"It broke. I fixed it. Now the break is the point."
This was a super fun project. Cedar rose pinecones — collected locally from parks in and around Campbell, California — were mounted on an oak spindle and cast into a warm peach and gold epoxy infused with gold fleck.
Halfway through coring the vase on the lathe, the piece unseated and shattered. Rather than discard it, the neck was recast using a deep black epoxy, drawing inspiration from the Japanese art of Kintsugi — the practice of repairing broken pottery with gold to honor the break rather than hide it. Here, the contrast between the warm amber body and the dark black neck creates a bold, intentional seam.
Hold it up to a window and the gold fleck ignites. Every angle reveals something new. Fully locally sourced and hand-turned in my home shop in California.
